New Government Proposal : Class 9-11 Marks Should be Included in Class 12 Report Card

New Government Proposal : Class 9-11 Marks Should be Included in Class 12 Report Cardt developments suggest that a student’s performance from Grades 9 to 11, based on both exams and continuous classwork, should be factored into their final Class 12 marks. This recommendation comes from a recent report submitted to the Ministry of Education by PARAKH.

After discussions with 32 school boards last year, PARAKH has presented a report to the Ministry of Education this month. The report recommends measures to align assessment standards across all school boards.

Key Recommendations of the PARAKH Report:

Inclusion of Performance from Previous Grades: The report suggests incorporating the performance from Grades 9, 10, and 11 into the final Class 12 report card. Specifically, it proposes that 15% of the weightage come from Grade 9, 20% from Grade 10, 25% from Grade 11, and 40% from Grade 12.

Assessment Criteria: According to PARAKH, the assessment should be based on both formative and summative evaluations. Formative assessment includes continuous classroom assessments, progress cards, group discussions, and projects, while summative assessment is based on term-end exams.

Percentage Breakdown for Assessments:

Grade 9: 70% of the final score should come from formative assessment and 30% from summative assessment.

Grade 10: The final score should be 50% formative assessment and 50% summative assessment.

Grade 11: 40% of the score should be based on formative assessment and 60% on summative assessment.

Grade 12: Formative assessment will contribute 30% and summative assessment 70% to the final score.

Feedback and Discussions:

The Indian Express reports that the PARAKH report will be shared with all school boards for feedback. Initial discussions have taken place with officials from Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.

During these discussions, some states argued for a different approach. They suggested that instead of integrating performance from Grades 9, 10, and 11 into the Class 12 report card, the final score for Class 10 should include 40% from Grade 9 and 60% from Grade 10. Similarly, Class 12 results should incorporate 40% from Grade 11 and 60% from Grade 12.

PARAKH’s Assessment Credit System:

PARAKH has also proposed a new assessment credit system. Students can earn up to 40 credits in Grades 9 and 10 and 44 credits in Grades 11 and 12. In Grades 9 and 10, 32 credits will be subject-specific (e.g., 12 credits for three languages, 4 credits for Mathematics, 4 credits for Science, 4 credits for Social Science, etc.).

What is PARAKH?

PARAKH is a new initiative introduced under NEP 2023. Its role is to set standards and criteria for student assessments and reviews. PARAKH was launched as part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
