NEET Controversy: Supreme Court Postpones NEET UG Hearing to July 18

The Supreme Court has moved the NEET UG 2024 hearing to July 18 because some parties haven’t received responses from the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA).

During a short hearing, the petitioners’ lawyer asked to schedule the pleas for July 15. However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was unavailable that day. Therefore, Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud set the next hearing for Thursday, July 18.

CBI Progress Report

The Supreme Court got a report from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) about their progress in looking into issues with the NEET UG 2024 exam.

Centre’s Data Analysis Findings

The Centre told the court that IIT Madras analyzed the NEET UG 2024 results and found no signs of cheating or unusual activity. The analysis showed no evidence of widespread malpractice or specific groups of students benefiting unfairly.

On July 8, the Supreme Court asked if data analysis could identify suspicious cases and separate problematic results from legitimate ones. The analysis focused on the top 1.4 lakh ranks out of approximately 1.1 lakh total seats and found no signs of cheating.

Key Points from the Analysis

  • Higher Scores Overall: There was a general increase in scores, especially in the 550 to 720 range, likely due to a 25% reduction in the syllabus.
  • Widespread High Scores: High scores were spread across many cities and testing centers, suggesting cheating was unlikely.

NEET UG 2024 Counselling

Students are eagerly waiting for updates on the NEET UG 2024 counselling schedule. The Centre announced that counselling will start in the third week of July and will occur in four rounds. If anyone is found guilty of cheating, their application will be canceled at any point during or after the counselling process.
